It's not the heat, it's the ... No, it's the heat. Really.

One Hundred and fifteen degreesThat is what the termometer on my patio said yesterday. Keep in mind that I'm not shitting youit was in direct sunlight. But STILL! I live in Northern California, not the face of hell Arizona. The temperature in my pool is a staggering 88°! It's practically a hot tub. And it's not heated in any way (other than the sun shining on it, of course). This afternoon, the temperature in my boyfriend's house (without an AC) was 101°. IT'S TOO HOT!

It's 2:30 in the AM, I'm not tired, and I am seriously considering drinking a glass of iced tea. I think I will get to sleep some time around ... Thrusday.

In addition to the heat around here, it also seems to be spider season. I have killed upwards of ten spiders in my house THIS WEEK. Yes, there are screens on our windows. No, there is no real reason they should all want to be in here like thousands of tasty flies to eat. Unless they're just in here to cool off. In which case, I can't really hold it against them but they definitely picked the wrong house to venture into.

And then there is this, because that's just how I roll. I'm a list-making mother fucker. Kind of an update on the to-do list.

This is how my computer desk currently looks. {Click here for a giant version if for some reason you would like to see it in more detail. LOTS more detail.} Only now there is a camera in the midst of all this. That's my Nautie-in-progress. I just printed out the directions for the Lelah skirt and put them in page protectors for my binder.* I've got mini a to-do list of things that need to be completed before I leave on Saturday. I realized the other day that I don't know how long it's been since I last washed my sheets, so that is high priority. I wish I had managed to get the empty glass that used to contain iced tea in this picture. Lately I've been sucking that stuff down like there's no tomorrow.
*I don't know if I've ever mentioned it, but I have a giant binder full of patterns. Some that I've printed out like this, some torn out of magazines and such. It is incredibly heavy, and almost full.

some things

I'm going on vacation in 6 days, and I'm trying to figure out which projects I'd like to start and take with me. I'm thinking I'd finally like to do some embroidery again. I have some waste canvas for cross-stitch but I'm not sure what I'd like to stitch on. Hm ...

I started a Nautie with some Caron Simply Soft I had lying around, and I'm going to use some of the yarn I got from my great grandma for the face. It's going well, but I really dislike DPNs in tight spaces.

Back to that vacation thing, I am leaving for 8 days starting July 1st. But the way I blog, you'll never know I'm gone!

it's really a bummer ....

to be sitting with a heat pack on one's lower abdomen in 90°+ heat. But sometimes it happens. I guess it is better than the alternative, as any parent could tell you.

ANYWAY, since I've been out of school all I have done is knit, watch tv, and party. Things are either incredibly hectic and busy or I don't even get dressed for days on end. I've got a number of projects going: SitCom Chic in a wool/cotton blend, a bag/purse thing I am making up as I go along in Patons Classic Merino, and my mom's afghan is STILL not finished. I believe I am still on the same square I was the last time I posted.

I went to Michael's yesterday and bought some stuffing for a future Nautie or two. I'm excited about that; I have never knit a stuffed animal before. However, I'm not letting myself start it until I finish something else. Preferably the afghan.

I bought two balls of Lion Cotton, the Lion Brand equivalent of Sugar and Cream, in this summery and cute turquiose color and I have NO idea what to do with it. It's so heavy! I've thought about a Lelah skirt, but I don't want to sew in a lining and all that. I am dying to knit something for summer, but I'm at a loss as to what. I pretty much dress for fall all year 'round, so that also leads to other issues like whether I will have anything to wear with something turquoise and knitted and whether I would actually wear it.

I should update that to-do list and compare it to what I have actually done. You guys will definitely find it hilarious!

on the subject of to-do lists ...

The real magic of a to-do list is that you do get things done. Just nothing that's on the list. I did get a little done with the afghan, only to realize that I have to do THREE more squares not two. I also looked through my big-ass book of stitch patterns for ideas for the last two squares.
I've had these 4 (well really 7, but only 4 are relevant) skeins of Patons Classic Merino lying around for months that I haven't been able to decide what to do with it. Both colors are rather hideous, one an olive green that is ever so reminiscent of shag carpet or grandma's refrigerator, and the other a brownish-green. I love them.  Two skeins of each. Just calling to me. I thought a scarf, at first, double knit, with some saying intarsia-ed into it. I just never got around to it. And now, who the hell wants to knit a scarf in June? My latest idea has been a felted purse/bag thing. I have knit and felted many-a-purse but I have yet to end up with one that I am happy enough with to use often. I have a shape/size and construction method in mind, but I don't know what I am going to do color-wise. I would really like to knit the bottom rectangle and then pick up stitches on 3 sides and proceed from there. I would also like to have the two large sides be one color and the smaller sides (like what would be the gusset in other constructions) be the other.  I had the bottom done before I realized that those two things are really not going to be incorporated together in an easy way. It is so much more pleasant to do things in the round. It is going to be felted, and it would be good practice seaming things, but I HATE knitting things in pieces like this. So I am deciding between sacrificing the color scheme I like, or the construction I like. I am leaning towards not even felting the thing at all and doing it in only the darker color. We will see ...
I have another dance competition this weekend. Hopefully this one goes better than the last. I'm at the point where I am seriously considering quitting dance. I'm not naturally talented and I don't have the drive and motivation it would take for me to be good. Decent, even. But hopefully I will be able to take some pictures/videos. I would rather just go to competitions and take pictures of everyone than dance, but I'm still doing it. I do like dance, it just depresses me that I am so bad at it.
I really need to get everyone's buttons added to my sidebar. They are a lot of really rad ones out there. I wish I could come up with one I like. : [/random]
AND, add to that to do list: PROJECT freakin' SPECTRUM! I signed up for it but keep forgetting. I'm planning on doing all the back months, if possible. I love the whole idea behind this, so I'm really not sure why I keep forgetting that it even exists!
ALSO! I have been meaning to mention this for a while. Instead of using google, be sure to use goodsearch.com. They will donate money to the charity of your choice for each search you make. I give to NARAL Pro-Choice, but let's not go any further down that road.
